3 Steps to Discover Your Interior Design Style (& Why You Should Care)

While it might seem like determining your interior design style can be discovered as easily as taking an online quiz (wouldn't that be nice), in actuality, it isn't so black and white. It certainly isn't too difficult to understand which style you gravitate towards most, i.e., traditional, modern, eclectic, or rustic.

But what if you love different aspects of each? When it comes down to it, homes reflect the people who live in them, their likes and dislikes, personal tastes, family memories, etc.  There is no right or wrong answer—just discovery. So let's discover YOUR style together!

Step 1: Collect Visual Inspiration Without Overthinking

If you have difficulty describing what you like or don't like, let imagery guide your discovery. Using your favorite sources, whether it's Pinterest, Instagram, Houzz, or magazines, begin pinning and saving anything that captures your attention. Don't worry about why you like a particular image! If it causes a positive emotional response, it's worth saving.

Step 2: Explore the Common Thread Between Each Image

Once you've gathered enough imagery of what you love, compare the photos to determine common design themes. Do you prefer spaces with a lot of color or more neutral hues? Do you love a space that feels dramatic or more subtle and understated? Does a room with a lot of décor and accessories excite or overwhelm you?

If you need help seeing the theme or similarities, don't stress. If we work together on a project, I will assist you in putting into words what you love and don't love.

Step 3: Begin a Concept Board Based on Theme & Style

The next step in fine-tuning your design style is to organize the photos based on common themes and styles. It is common to like different styles, so this is where you can begin to pinpoint which aspects of each style you prefer. Visualizing everything together will help give you the words that exemplify your style.

Ready for homework? Start exploring and saving those photos! For many of us, our tastes and style evolve, so don't be surprised if the outcome differs from what you expected. Again, it is all about discovery, and we can help you fine-tune the perfect design direction before making furnishing selections.

When the project is finally completed, you'll come out on the other side, knowing your home truly reflects you and your personality. What could be better?
