The Amazing Thing Curtains Will Do for Even the Smallest Rooms of Your Home

Properly sized and hung drapery can do wonders for a space. Whether the ceilings are too low, the windows are too small, or the overall space feels cramped, the room will instantly feel bigger and brighter by simply raising the rod placement and widening the distance between mounting brackets.

Today I am going over the three tips everyone should keep in mind when hanging window treatments. These recommendations make even ready-made drapery panels look custom on any window.

Tip #1: Rod Placement Should Be Purposeful

Install the rod close to the ceiling for floor length curtains. This gives the illusion that the ceiling is higher, making the room feel bigger. A good rule of thumb is to install the drapery rod at least halfway between the top of the window casing and the ceiling.

If your room has crown molding, I recommend placing the rod about 1-2 inches below the crown. Sometimes you have decorative molding around a window that will limit rod placement. Prioritize the overall height of the window treatment, and if there are multiple windows in a room, rod placement height must be consistent.

Tip #2: Bracket Location Should Be a Big Deal

To prevent your new window treatment from blocking precious natural light when fully open, ensure sufficient room to stack the panels on either side of the window without affecting the view. Do this by spacing the mounting brackets at least 20-24 inches more than the overall width of the window. Doing this makes the window look wider, and the room feels brighter.

Tip #3: Drapery Length Should Be Deliberate

Drapery trends have changed over the years, particularly when it comes to how the drapes lay. Puddling, which refers to excess drapery fabric piled on the floor, is best for formal spaces such as dining rooms, living rooms, and libraries as it can create drama. For a clean look, the bottom of the drapery panels should just kiss the floor without breaking, bending, or hovering 1/2-1" above the floor. If there is more than 1" between the bottom of the drapes and the floor, it will look like the drapes have shrunk.

You might be surprised to believe that even a few minor adjustments to your window treatments can significantly impact the overall look and feel of the space. But trust me, it will! So if you're looking for ways to instantly make a room feel bigger, brighter, and effortlessly elegant, start with the window treatments.
