Why Your Home's Design Matters When it Comes to Holiday Hosting

A well-designed home is one that transitions from your everyday use to hosting guests and special events effortlessly. When you are taking on the role of host (joyfully or not), the last thing you want to worry about is having enough seating to accommodate everyone. The holidays can be stressful— let's ensure our homes are the last thing we need to fret about.

Tip #1: When Furnishing Your Space, Select Multi-Functional Storage Items

When it comes to storing special event items like linens and serving ware, don't relegate your pieces to the garage or basement. Rather, incorporating a piece of furniture, like a sideboard, into your entertaining space will provide ample room to store those occasionally used items. It will also allow you to keep them within close reach for impromptu or last minute get-togethers.

The top of a sideboard is an ideal place to display food and beverages for guests to graze. Sideboards generally are low profile and work well in most spaces, including a kitchen, dining room or living room.

Tip #2: When Arranging Your Room, Make Multiple Seating Plans

When we create a space plan for a client's home, we always ensure that the plan and layout of furniture can allow for additional seating at a moment's notice while maintaining adequate room for walking between furniture.

If you have a particularly large room, consider having multiple areas for guests to gather, such as a sitting area on one end and a game table on the other. Swivel chairs add functionality by allowing guests to engage with the different areas of the room. Keeping a few lightweight side chairs against a wall will add to the room's aesthetic when not in use and provide extra seating in a pinch.

Tip #3: When Decorating Your Home, Add Thoughtful Seasonal Accessories

I believe in having a home that is thoughtfully decorated year-round (we offer a variety of services that can help you achieve just that) and then incorporating holiday décor sparingly to celebrate the season. Like most of our belongings, a holiday item holds more value when there is a story behind it. Bringing it out of storage each year will remind you of the memories associated with it again.

Choose to display seasonal décor that also serves a purpose, like a serving tray or accent pillow. All natural materials like twigs, evergreens and dehydrated fruit can add to your seasonal decorating scheme while being environmentally friendly.
