3 Tips for Maximizing Kitchen Storage With a Renovation

Designing kitchens is like a puzzle! My goal is always to maximize the space for the client's needs while ensuring the function is not lost. For most people, there is no such thing as too much storage, particularly storage that keeps us organized and limits clutter.

If you are considering a kitchen remodel, the opportunity to address and increase your kitchen's functionality and storage goes hand in hand with updating the backsplash and lighting fixtures. Keep reading for three tips to consider if you're looking to make some big changes in the kitchen!

Tip #1: Extend Your Cabinets to the Ceiling

When we are limited on square footage, the next best option for increased storage is going up! Most kitchen remodels now include 42" tall upper cabinets for 8' ceilings and 60"+ tall for 9'+ ceilings. This allows the cabinetry to go all the way to the ceiling and, along with crown molding, creates that custom built-in look.

Another option for adding storage is to have an upper cabinet resting on the countertop rather than floating 18" above. While this will reduce the amount of useable counter space, it creates the perfect solution for having small appliances close by but hidden when not in use.

Tip #2: Create Custom Built-Ins for More Functional Storage

Recently, I have been remodeling many kitchens that were designed in the late 90s and early 2000s that include a built-in desk with upper cabinets. This is where the landline would have been plugged in!

A great new option for these niches is to create custom built-ins that are also self-serving coffee bars and baking stations. With fully retractable doors, a closed cabinet can transform into an additional serving/working station within the kitchen!

Tip #3: Install an Island with Hidden Storage

If your kitchen allows for an island without taking away walking space (we recommend at least 36" of walking space in front of all cabinets and appliances), create additional storage by having cabinetry within the island. The larger the island, the more work and prep space you will have and additional seating options.

Bonus Tip: Use Drawers for Lower Cabinetry

Another common trend for kitchen remodels today is more drawers and fewer doors with shelving in lower cabinets. And for good reason.

Drawers allow full access to everything stored without items getting lost in the back. It is also easier to store and retrieve dishware and heavier objects in a deep drawer versus a cabinet. Alternatively, pull-out shelves can be used for similar functionality as drawers.

You would be amazed to see how much today's kitchen remodels increase storage and functionality within the space without needing to physically expand. When we work on a kitchen renovation, we are diligent in ensuring the space is designed perfectly for the family that will be using it day in and day out.

In other words, function and ease of use are the priority, followed closely by aesthetics. Our experience in kitchen design makes it possible to (theoretically) eat your cake and have it too!
